Enhance Your Glow With Love, Not Make Up

By Nigora Normatova, author of Wake Up! Stop Snoozing on Your Health

It has been exactly three months since I have taken a conscious decision to stop wearing any kind of makeup.

I was not a particularly heavy user, but I used mascara, concealer and blusher on a daily basis. Occasionally I liked using bright red lipstick, believing that it made me look stronger and sexier.

Today, I am twenty-nine years old and I have been wearing makeup since I was fourteen years old. It got to the point that I couldn’t even imagine leaving the house without at least some concealer and mascara. Growing up in a private boarding school in England, I was under the impression that the more make up the girls wore, the more attention they received and the more ‘popular’ they were. During my university years, still not quite at one with myself, I always tried to enhance my looks, thinking that who I was would never be enough.

As I started working in my early twenties, I wanted to look older in order to be taken seriously, and that’s when I was spending an average of $1,000 a year on the best cosmetic products. I even remember an article I read in a magazine that discussed how much money women spent on cosmetics and facials. The numbers were extortionate, and I felt so sad that I couldn’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on the same kind of products and treatments. I promised myself that one day I would be able to; it was something to aspire to. Today I’m infinitely grateful that it’s no longer something that interests me.

I’ve recently become aware of the various messages associated with make up. Perhaps you can relate to some of them. These messages really dented my inner confidence.

“I have to hide my terrible skin”

“I have small eyes and need to make them bigger”

“I am prettier with makeup”

“It’s not acceptable to go to work without makeup”

“To stand out, you have to wear makeup”

“What will other people think if I am not wearing makeup?”

“People always ask me if I am okay if I don’t wear makeup”

I could go on and on. There are so many ways that we are fed ideas that make us believe that who we are is simply not enough.

To be clear, I am not entirely against makeup. What I am truly against is women hiding themselves on a daily basis behind chemical substances that not only harm their health but also harm their sense of self-love, self-respect and self-confidence.

I invite you to repeat the affirmation below on a daily basis in front of the mirror. Spend five minutes enhancing the glow of your skin and the sparkle in your eyes by showering yourself with these loving kind words:

“I love myself, I respect myself and I am even more confident without the daily make up. I am what I am. I love me and my opinion is the only one that matters.”

The consequences of my own barefaced lifestyle have become apparent:

  • My skin is healthier

  • I take more care of my skin through face fitness, steaming, scrubbing, and masks (all with natural ingredients)

  • I make sure my diet is healthy

  • I have more time on my hands

  • I have more cash in my pocket!

  • I receive more compliments

  • I have become confident not only in the way I look but also in all other aspects of my life.

If you want to wear your natural look with confidence, then let us start the journey of healing together. To go makeup free is not just an act of boycotting the brainwashing of cosmetic brands, but it is above all, to love oneself. And don’t we all need a bit more love in our lives today?
